Seniors and Those with Special Needs

Overview of Silky Services Service Offering

Silky Support Services focuses on the delivery of services to two primary groups: seniors and those with special needs.

Our services for seniors are tailored to their specific needs, including staying in their own home longer,
maximizing their independence, assisting with the transition from hospital to home and helping them
achieve an active stimulating lifestyle.

Our services for specialty needs individuals are tailored to the specific nature of the individual’s
condition, which could include dementia, Alzheimer’s, cognitive impairment, physical impairment, end
of life and complex disabilities and disorders. Our objective in such cases is to identify and build upon
the individual’s strengths and capabilities.

In either case our approach is systematic and measured, generally as follows:

  • We begin with an intake session during which we make a careful assessment of the individual’s needs and capabilities.
  • Using this knowledge we develop a specific program of recreational activities that build upon the individual’s strengths and address their identified needs.
  • We then implement the program
  • We periodically review the program with the individual to identify progress and / or the need for refinements.

Companionship
This would be a one on one visit of longer duration perhaps a half day or full day (and for one on one visits we should require a minimum half day due to travel). This would most likely occur in the person's home or neighbourhood. Examples could include:

  • personal hygiene support
  • bathing assistance
  • assistance using washroom

  • transferring / repositioning
  • medication administration
  • accompaniments to medical and personal appointments

Mentoring
This would again be a one on one type event, but probably of one or two hour duration as it would be a training type session. These would most likely occur virtually to avoid travel given the brief duration. Examples could include:

  • immediate telephone contact in case of an emergency
  • training and skills development
  • guidance and assistance
  • tutoring

Life skill development
This would again be a one on one type session of about a half day and would involve activities intended to prepare the client for an active lifestyle and develop essential life skills. Shorter sessions could be accommodated virtually. Examples could include:

  • group virtual events could include presentations or training
  • group or individual visits to transit stations, shopping centres, grocery stores, banks, etc.
  • cooking, cleaning and homemaking
  • light housekeeping/organizing
  • laundry assistance
  • financial planning, banking

Socialization
This one has two types of activity. These activities could be one on one type activities conducted virtually or in person. Some activities could be conducted in a group setting either virtually or in person to provide a socialization experience. Examples could include:

  • checking in with the patient for an hour or so
  • playing games together
  • meeting together in person
  • organized virtual or in person events
  • virtual bingo games
  • group event such as shopping or bowling

Physical activities
These types of events would most likely be in person and for periods of moderate duration. Examples could include:

  • Walks
  • AROM exercises
  • therapeutic pet experiences
